“The expansive mountainscapes of the Andes are the basis for this new 35mm film by Daïchi Saïto, who won the 2016 Tiger Award for Short Films with Engram of Returning. Once again propelled by the free, pulsating improvisation of saxophonist Jason Sharp, in which his heartbeat and breathing play a prominent role, the series of images slowly becomes more abstract. The end result is a hypnotic, sensory meditation on ‘our’ earth.” ––International Film Festival Rotterdam

The Decline (French: Jusqu’au déclin) is a Canadian thriller drama film, directed by Patrice Laliberté and released in 2020. The first Quebec film to be produced as a Netflix original film, the film stars Guillaume Laurin as Antoine, a man in rural Nord-du-Québec who joins a survivalist training program led by Alain (Réal Bossé) after becoming convinced that a natural disaster is imminent.
ENGRAM OF RETURNING
Collaboration with film maker Daïchi Saïto
“Accompanied by an extraordinary improvisational score by Jason Sharp, Engram of Returning is an epic 35mm CinemaScope metaphysical travelogue that reveals a supernal world which pulses and flickers with formal patterns and deep hues. Transforming anonymous found footage into powerful, expressive and painterly imagery, it is a film about memory and recollection, given form through interwoven backward glances at the real, the imagined and the remembered.” – ROTTERDAM FILM FESTIVAL
“ENGRAM OF RETURNING is a mighty explosion of a movie… Saïto, in essence, conjures new trace memories for his audience by offering hazy glimpses of landscapes that are never fully graspable, like halfremembered dreams. The visceral thrill of ENGRAM OF RETURNING owes much to Jason Sharp’s circular- breathed saxophone score, which is ruthless and mesmerising. (Darren Hughes)” – Vienna International Film Festival
